Breathing
Sometimes healing begins with something as simple as taking a breath.
I never really thought about breathing. We breathe from the moment we are born. In and out. Without thinking about it. Our bodies know what to do. Looking at babies breathing, there is something beautiful about it. The breath is soft. The body moves naturally. There is no effort. And somewhere along the way, many of us lose that natural rhythm. Life happens. Stress. Fear. Worry. Trying to keep everything together, trying to be everything for everyone. And before we even realise it, our breathing can change. Mine did.
When Breathing Changed
During stressful periods of my life, I noticed that my breathing became much shallower. At first, I didn't think much about it. There was always something to do. Something else to think about. Another thing on my list. My mind was busy, my body was tense, and I was constantly moving from one thing to the next. Even when I was sitting still, I didn't really feel still. It was as if my whole body had forgotten what it meant to slow down. And then I discovered something very simple. My breath was always there. Waiting for me.
Learning to Breathe Again
I wish I could tell you that learning to breathe calmly was easy. It wasn't. It took me about a year and a half to notice my breathing and learn to slow it down. A year and a half. Something that sounds so simple. Just breathe. But when you have spent years living with tension, rushing, worrying and trying to keep control, slowing down can feel surprisingly difficult. At first, I had to remind myself to breathe and to slow down. Relax the shoulders. Take another breath. And then another. Some days it felt natural. And days when I completely forgot. But slowly, I began to notice the difference.
Coming Back to Myself
For me, breathing became more than something my body did. It became a way of coming back to myself. When my thoughts were racing, I could return to my breath. When I felt overwhelmed, I could pause. When I noticed that I was holding tension in my body, I could soften a little. I didn't have to solve everything in that moment. I didn't have to understand everything. I could breathe. And sometimes, that was enough for that moment.
The Space Between
There is something beautiful about a breath. We take one in. And then we let it go. We don't have to hold on to it forever. Perhaps healing is a little like that too. Taking in what we need. And slowly learning to let go of what we no longer need to carry. Not all at once. Not perfectly. Just a little at a time.I still have moments when I notice my breathing becoming quicker or shallower. Especially when I am stressed or my mind becomes busy. But now I notice it. And noticing is already a form of awareness. I can stop. Take a breath. And remind myself: You are here. You are safe. You don't have to rush.
A Gentle Moment
Maybe you could try something with me. Not as another thing you have to achieve. Not as another item on your to-do list. Just as a small moment for yourself. Sit somewhere comfortable. Put down whatever you are doing. And notice your breath. Don't change it immediately. Just notice it. Is it quick? Is it slow? Are you holding your breath without realising it? Is your body tense? Nothing needs your attention. Just be. When ready, allow your next breath to be a little slower. Let the breath come in gently. And let it leave gently. Stay there for a few moments. There is no perfect way to do this. There is no number of breaths you need to reach. There is nothing to get right. It is simply a moment where you are with yourself. And perhaps that is where the beauty of breathing really is. It brings you back to the present. Back to your body. Back to yourself.
Keep Breathing
I learned that healing doesn't always arrive through big changes. Sometimes it arrives quietly. In a breath. In a pause. In the moment when you finally stop running for a while. And sometimes, when life feels overwhelming, the only thing you need to remember is this: You are here. Take a breath. And take the next step when you are ready.
Keep breathing.
You are safe. You are not alone. And you can move forward in your own time and space.
