To Be Heard, Seen, and Valued
You deserve to feel safe enough to be yourself.
There is something deeply comforting about being truly heard. Not simply listened to. But heard. Seen. Understood. Valued.
In a relationship, we want to feel we can bring our whole selves into it—our thoughts, our dreams, our fears, our laughter, our imperfections, and everything in between. We want to know that there is room for us. But sometimes, we can be in a relationship and still feel completely alone. I know this feeling.
When you don't feel understood
For a long time, I felt lonely in my relationship. I didn't feel that I could freely talk about my deepest thoughts or my dreams. When I spoke about the things I hoped for, I was sometimes told to stop dreaming and be realistic. So, little by little, I became quieter. I started questioning myself. Perhaps my dreams were unrealistic. Perhaps I was asking for too much. Perhaps I needed to change. But somewhere inside me, there was still a small voice saying: This isn't who you are.
The importance of being seen
Being seen is more than someone looking at you. It means someone takes the time to know you. To notice when something is wrong. To listen when you speak. To care about what matters to you. To make space for your feelings without making you feel that you are too much. When we don't experience that, we can begin to lose sight of ourselves. I tried to adapt to the standards I believed I needed to meet to feel accepted. I tried to become the person I thought I needed to be. And somewhere along the way... I became another version of myself. I was still there. But I was no longer fully being me.
You should not have to disappear to be loved.
Love should give you space to breathe. You shouldn't have to make yourself smaller so someone else feels comfortable. You shouldn't have to silence your dreams. You shouldn't have to hide your feelings. And you shouldn't have to become someone else to feel worthy of love. A healthy relationship ensures that two people remain themselves while growing together. There should be room for your individuality. Your opinions. Your dreams. Your boundaries. Your imperfections. All of you.
Feeling valued
Being valued goes beyond compliments. It is the feeling that your presence matters. That your thoughts matter. That your feelings matter. That you matter. A kind word. A thoughtful gesture. Someone remembering something important to you. A genuine compliment. A hand held at the right moment. A shared laugh. Someone asking, "How are you really doing?" — and staying to listen to the answer. These moments can make us feel cherished. And yes, there were moments when I felt cherished too. There were days when I felt valued. That is part of what can make relationships complicated. Not everything is bad. Not everything is good. Alongside the beautiful moments are the moments that hurt us. And sometimes it takes time to understand what a relationship is really teaching us.
What does a healthy relationship feel like?
A healthy relationship isn't perfect. Two people will disagree. They will misunderstand each other. They will have difficult days. But there should still be a foundation of respect, safety and care. You should be able to speak without being afraid of being dismissed. You should be able to dream without being made to feel foolish. You should be able to say no. You should be able to have your own thoughts and feelings. And you should be able to remain yourself. We can all practice this. Listen with your heart, not only your ears. Put away the distractions and really be present. Ask questions because you genuinely want to understand. Tell the people you love what you appreciate about them. Celebrate their individuality rather than trying to change it. And when someone shares something vulnerable with you, remember that sometimes they don't need you to fix it. They need you to listen.
And if you haven't found that kind of love yet...
Please don't believe that you have missed your chance. And please don't believe that being alone means you are unworthy of love. There is another relationship that deserves your attention too. The relationship you have with yourself. You can begin there. Learn to listen to your own voice. Learn what feels right for you. Learn to honour your boundaries. Learn to appreciate the person you are becoming. And slowly... Learn to give yourself the love you may have been waiting for someone else to give you, because love isn't something you have to earn by becoming someone else's idea of perfect.
You are worthy of love simply because you are you.
And if you haven't found the love you deserve yet... Start by giving some of it to yourself. It is your birthright.
A gentle reflection
Take a quiet moment and ask yourself: Do I feel safe enough to be completely myself in my relationships?
Can I speak about my dreams without feeling ashamed of them? Do I feel heard, seen and valued? And perhaps most importantly: Am I still being myself? You don't need to have all the answers today. Just be honest with yourself. Sometimes healing begins with finally admitting what your heart has known for a very long time.
You deserve to be heard. You deserve to be seen. You deserve to be valued. And you never have to disappear to be loved.
